Heating Water With a Heat Pump Instead of an Element

A heat pump water heater pulls heat from surrounding air into the tank rather than generating heat with an element, so the same hot water costs a fraction of the electricity. Where a heat pump water heater can go
This is the question that decides most installations, and it gets asked too late. A heat pump water heater extracts heat from the air around the tank, which means the space has to supply that heat. In a small sealed closet the unit cools its own surroundings until efficiency collapses and the backup element takes over — at which point the household has bought an expensive conventional tank.
Garages, utility rooms, basements and any space with meaningful volume and air exchange work well. Ducting the intake or exhaust is possible where the location is otherwise right but tight.
The unit also produces condensate, which needs a drain or a condensate pump. On a slab or in a finished room that requirement occasionally rules out an otherwise good location — and in the compact older housing around Ladysmith, the obvious spot is often exactly the sealed closet that will not work.
